Biography:
Coach Shankel is a 1987 graduate of Breckenridge High School where he participated in football, golf, basketball and baseball. He holds the unofficial distinction of being the first basketball player to dunk in a game for the Huskies.
In 1999, Coach Shankel began his coaching career as the JV boys basketball coach at Breckenridge High School. After one year, he was promoted to be the Varsity coach where he served two seasons before moving to DeWitt. In 2002, Coach Shankel began coaching freshmen boys basketball for the Panthers until 2005 when he served as the JV boys coach through the 2010 season. In 2008, Coach Shankel served as the JV boys golf coach before leaving that position to help as an assistant coach for the baseball program. In 2010, Coach Shankel was hired as the Varsity Baseball Coach for DeWitt High School where he has helped guide the program to:
- 7 league championships (2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021, 2022)
- 7 district championships (2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2024)
- 4 regional championships (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018)
- 3 Final Four appearances (2014, 2016, 2018)
- 3 Diamond Classic Championships (2017, 2022, 2024)
